Term review

My term ends soon. What are my options?

When a term policy is ending, you can keep it, convert it if your policy allows, replace it, or let it end.

Where a VUL may fit

It may be worth exploring if you:

  • Have a term policy that ends in the next few years and still want coverage
  • Want protection that lasts as long as you need it
  • Can pay premiums steadily for many years

Where it may not

Another approach may fit better if you:

  • Will no longer need life insurance once your term ends
  • Could meet your need for less with a new term policy or by converting your current one
  • Would find permanent-coverage premiums at your age hard to keep up
  • Would rather not take on market risk

A review covers those other options too. Any recommendation comes only after an individual suitability review.

Protection

Protection your family can count on

A death benefit designed to last your lifetime, generally paid to your beneficiaries income-tax-free.1

  • Protect your family, your estate or your business

What to know: Coverage continues while the policy stays in force.

The pillar that answers your question

Protection your family can count on

Pacific Select Harbor VUL works three ways: protection, long-term growth potential and living benefits. See all three →

1 Life insurance death benefits are generally income-tax-free to beneficiaries under IRC Sec. 101(a)(1); exceptions apply, such as certain transfers for value and employer-owned policies. Loans, withdrawals and loan interest reduce policy values and may reduce benefits. Pacific Life does not provide tax advice.
Hypothetical example

How a review might go

A couple in their late fifties have a term policy that ends in a few years. Their children are grown, but they still want to leave something behind.

In a review, they compare four options: keep the term policy until it ends, convert it if their policy allows, replace it with permanent coverage, or let it end. Each option is weighed for cost, health questions and what it leaves for their family.

This example is fictional and for illustration only. It is not a real client and shows no policy values, premiums or results. Your situation, and any recommendation, would be reviewed individually.

Before you decide

What it costs and what to watch for

  • Charges every month: cost of insurance, administrative, coverage and asset charges, plus a premium load on each payment and the investment options’ own expenses
  • A surrender charge if you surrender the policy in its early years
  • Market risk: variable investment options can lose value, including principal
  • Lapse risk: if cash value can’t cover the monthly charges, the policy can end without more premium
  • Loans and withdrawals reduce cash value and the death benefit and can cause a lapse and taxes
  • If you are thinking about replacing a policy, keep your current coverage until any new policy is in force, and compare the costs, surrender charges and a new contestability period first. State replacement rules and a best-interest review apply to any replacement.

Read the prospectus before you decide

A VUL policy is a variable product. The current prospectus describes the policy's features, charges, investment options and risks in full. Ask Markist for the current prospectus and review it carefully.

Compare honestly

Other options to consider

A review compares these with Pacific Select Harbor VUL, so you can choose what fits.

Keep your term policy

Coverage continues at today’s premium until the term ends. It builds no cash value and stops at the end of the term.

Convert it, if your policy allows

Some term policies allow conversion to permanent coverage with the same insurer by a deadline. Check your policy for its terms.

A new term policy

A new term policy may cost less than permanent coverage, but it ends again, and your age and health affect the price.

Questions

Common questions

Can I convert my term policy into this one?

That depends on your current policy and insurer. Conversion usually means a policy from the same insurer, by a set deadline. Check your policy or ask Markist to review it with you.

Will I need health questions or an exam?

A new policy is subject to underwriting, which may include health questions or an exam. Your age and health affect the cost.

Should I cancel my term policy first?

No. Keep your current coverage until any new policy is issued and in force.
