For business owners

Protect your family and your business

“What happens to my business and my family if I’m gone?”

Pacific Select Harbor VUL offers protection that lasts as long as you need it. A review looks at your family and your business together, with the costs, risks and other options explained.

Where a VUL may fit

It may be worth exploring if you:

  • Want protection for your family and your business in one plan
  • Need coverage that lasts as long as you need it, not just a set term
  • Can pay premiums steadily for many years
  • Want to talk through buy-sell or key-person questions, with your attorney and CPA involved

Where it may not

Another approach may fit better if you:

  • Need coverage only for a set period, such as the life of a business loan
  • Have uneven cash flow that would make steady premiums hard
  • May need the money within the next several years
  • Are not comfortable with values that can go up and down with the markets

A review covers those other options too. Any recommendation comes only after an individual suitability review.

Protection

Protection your family can count on

A death benefit designed to last your lifetime, generally paid to your beneficiaries income-tax-free.1

  • Protect your family, your estate or your business

What to know: Coverage continues while the policy stays in force.

The pillar that answers your question

Why protection comes first for owners

If you own a business, your family and your business may both depend on you. Pacific Select Harbor VUL is designed to provide a death benefit for your lifetime, while the policy stays in force. You can protect your family, your estate or your business.

Many owners also ask how a buy-sell agreement could be funded, or whether key-person coverage makes sense. A review treats these as questions to explore with your attorney and CPA. Markist does not give tax or legal advice.

Pacific Select Harbor VUL works three ways: protection, long-term growth potential and living benefits. See all three →

1 Life insurance death benefits are generally income-tax-free to beneficiaries under IRC Sec. 101(a)(1); exceptions apply, such as certain transfers for value and employer-owned policies. Loans, withdrawals and loan interest reduce policy values and may reduce benefits. Pacific Life does not provide tax advice.
Hypothetical example

How a review might go

Two partners own a small company. Each wonders what would happen to the business, and to their own family, if one of them died.

In a review, they talk through how a buy-sell agreement could be funded, whether key-person coverage makes sense, and how their personal protection fits alongside it. Their attorney and CPA set up any agreement. The review looks at whether life insurance is the right way to fund it, what it would cost and what the alternatives are.

This example is fictional and for illustration only. It is not a real client and shows no policy values, premiums or results. Your situation, and any recommendation, would be reviewed individually.

Before you decide

What it costs and what to watch for

  • Charges every month: cost of insurance, administrative, coverage and asset charges, plus a premium load on each payment and the investment options’ own expenses
  • A surrender charge if you surrender the policy in its early years
  • Market risk: variable investment options can lose value, including principal
  • Lapse risk: if cash value can’t cover the monthly charges, the policy can end without more premium
  • Loans and withdrawals reduce cash value and the death benefit and can cause a lapse and taxes
  • A business arrangement, such as a buy-sell agreement or an executive bonus plan, has tax and legal effects that your own advisors should confirm.

See it with your own numbers. Premiums depend on your age, health and the amount of coverage, so this page shows no prices. Your personalized illustration, prepared in a consultation, shows them. Request a consultation →

Read the prospectus before you decide

A VUL policy is a variable product. The current prospectus describes the policy's features, charges, investment options and risks in full. Ask Markist for the current prospectus and review it carefully.

Compare honestly

Other options to consider

A review compares these with Pacific Select Harbor VUL, so you can choose what fits.

Term life insurance

Often costs less at first and covers a set period, such as the length of a loan. It builds no cash value and ends when the term ends.

Other permanent insurance

Whole life and universal life policies also offer lifelong protection, with different costs, guarantees and ways of building cash value. A review can compare them.

Business savings or other funding

Setting money aside inside the business avoids insurance charges, but it provides no death benefit if something happens early.
